The Royal Victoria Hotel Review, Llanberis, Gwynedd, Wales

The food won’t receive any Michelin stars any time soon but it is homely and tasty. In the cosy bar, burgers, fish and chips, curry, fish pie and stone-baked pizzas will satisfy hungry walkers. In the first-floor conservatory brasserie, the menu is more upmarket – perhaps assiette of salmon followed by herb-crusted belly pork and finished off with Baileys creme brûlée – and the atmosphere is more romantic, with music wafting and table lamps along the windowsill. Much of the food, including meat, fish and fruit and vegetables is locally sourced.

The breakfast is a DIY buffet - toast your own bread, make your own tea or coffee and pick slightly soggy cooked breakfast options from the warming plate. There is also cereal, fruit salad, yogurt, nuts, dried fruits, juices and croissants on offer.
